ChatGPT launched in November 2022. In 2025 we were all grappling with what this means for our society and our organisations. It's 2026, we are all using AI tools and now it is time to take control of the tools, move beyond the hype and become crystal clear on determining what's working and what is not.

This blog is written with the caveat that we are by no means experts. We are experimenting and trialling tools for ourselves, and we are asking clients what is working for them.

Artificial Intelligence (AI) is no longer a future concept; it’s here, transforming industries and redefining competitive advantage. For CEOs and senior leaders, the question isn’t if AI will impact your organisation, but how prepared you are to harness its potential.

This blog offers a pragmatic approach to assess your organisation’s readiness for AI and explores the critical role leaders play in this transformation.

Why Organisational Readiness Matters

AI adoption isn’t just about technology; it’s about people, processes, and culture. Organisations that rush in without preparation risk wasted investment, ethical missteps, and employee resistance. Those that take a structured approach unlock efficiency, innovation, and new revenue streams.

Understanding AI's Impact on Business

AI is reshaping how we operate. It enhances decision-making, streamlines processes, and fosters innovation. However, the transition can be daunting. Leaders must navigate this landscape with care.

6 Steps to Assess AI Readiness

1. Evaluate Strategic Alignment

  • Is AI embedded in your business strategy?

  • Do you have a clear business case for AI initiatives?

Leader’s Role: Set the vision. Communicate why AI matters and how it supports organisational goals. Your clarity reduces fear and builds trust.

2. Assess Data Readiness

AI thrives on quality data. Without it, even the most advanced algorithms fail.

  • Do we have clean, accessible, and secure data?

  • Are our data governance and compliance frameworks robust?

Leader’s Role: Champion data integrity and privacy. Position ethical data use as a non-negotiable standard.

3. Review Technology Infrastructure

  • Can our current systems support AI integration?

  • Do we have the right tools and platforms for scalability?

Leader’s Role: Approve investments strategically. Avoid chasing shiny tech; focus on solutions that integrate seamlessly with existing workflows.

4. Gauge Talent and Culture Readiness

AI adoption is as much about mindset as skillset.

  • Do we have the right talent mix: data scientists, engineers, and domain experts?

  • Is our culture open to change and experimentation?

Leader’s Role: Foster psychological safety. Encourage curiosity and continuous learning. Upskill your workforce and lead by example.

5. Establish Governance and Ethics

AI introduces new risks, including bias, transparency, and accountability.

  • Do we have an AI ethics framework?

  • Are we prepared for regulatory compliance?

Leader’s Role: Be the ethical compass. Ensure fairness and inclusivity in AI-driven decisions. Bias can creep in through data or algorithms; leaders must actively mitigate this.

6. Start Small, Scale Smart

Pilot projects allow you to learn, adapt, and build confidence before enterprise-wide deployment.

Leader’s Role: Celebrate wins and share lessons learned. Transparency builds momentum and trust.

Questions Leaders Can Ask to Spark Dialogue

Engaging your team early is critical. These questions help uncover insights, surface concerns, and build alignment:

Strategic Alignment

  • Where do you see the biggest opportunities for AI in our business?

  • Which processes or customer experiences could benefit most from automation or intelligence?

Data Readiness

  • Do we trust the quality and accessibility of our data?

  • What gaps exist in our data governance or compliance practices?

Technology Infrastructure

  • What challenges do you foresee in integrating AI with our current systems?

  • Are there tools or platforms you believe could accelerate our progress?

Talent and Culture

  • How comfortable do you feel experimenting with AI in your role?

  • What skills or training would help you feel more confident?

Governance and Ethics

  • What ethical risks should we anticipate as we adopt AI?

  • How can we ensure fairness and transparency in AI-driven decisions?

Change Management

  • What concerns do you have about AI impacting your work or our culture?

  • How can leadership support you during this transition?

Final Thoughts

AI is not a threat; it presents a tangible opportunity. But readiness requires intentional leadership. CEOs and senior leaders must balance ambition with responsibility, ensuring AI serves both business goals and societal good.

The organisations that thrive in the AI age will be those whose leaders embrace change with clarity, empathy, and courage.

In conclusion, as you navigate this transformative journey, remember that the phrase “AI is not just a tool; it's a partner in innovation.” encapsulates the essence of your approach. Embrace AI thoughtfully, and you will unlock its full potential for your organisation's future.
